    Eficacia del rimadyl® en el control del dolor y la recuperación postquirúrgica después de una cirugía por dislocación abomasal

    Se han estudiado los efectos de la aplicación de Rimadyl® (carprofeno 50 mg/ml) sobre la concentración de cortisol, temperatura rectal, frecuencia respiratoria, frecuencia cardiaca y motilidad ruminal, con el objetivo evaluar su eficacia en el control del dolor y la recuperación postquirúrgica, al aplicarlo antes de la cirugía por dislocación abomasal. Se seleccionaron 24 vacas de características similares que iban a someterse a cirugía por dislocación abomasal y se asignaron al azar a uno de los dos tratamientos experimentales: Rimadyl® o suero salino fisiológico. La aplicación de Rimadyl® disminuye (P=0,006) la concentración plasmática de cortisol (11,3 ng/mL vs 22,13 ng/mL). Con el tiempo se reducen (P=0,024) los niveles de cortisol plasmático. Esta reducción es más acusada (P=0,0003) con Rimadyl® a las 6 horas de su aplicación. La producción de leche postcirugía fue mayor en los animales que recibieron Rimadyl® en comparación con los que se les aplicó suero salino fisiológic

Publisher Copyright: © 2022 Elsevier B.V.Blowflies have forensic, sanitary and veterinary importance, as well as being pollinators, parasitoids and ecological bioindicators. There is still little work with real data and from experiments assessing the relationship between blowflies’ morphologic features and environmental and demographic factors. The present work tests whether the variation, in the shape and size, of Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann, 1819) wings is influenced by the following factors: 1) time; 2) temperature; 3) sex and; 4) different types of carcasses (pig, dog/cat and whale). Male and female wings from four different sites collected in six different years were used to obtain wing size and shape of C. albiceps. Analyses between wing shape and the variables tested had low explanatory power, even though they had statistical support. However, it was possible to identify differences in wing shape between males and females, with good returns in sex identification. The comparison between wing size and the variables tested showed that wing size has a negative relationship with temperature, significant differences between sexes, slight variation over time and no influence by carcass types. Furthermore, wing size influenced wing shape. Understanding population-specific characteristics of C. albiceps provide important insights about how the species reacts under specific conditions.publishersversionpublishe

    Detailed study of open cluster PIS 20

    The very young open cluster Pis 20 has been analyzed by employing CCD UBVR photometry. Down to V = 19 mag, new blue and faint members were found. With them we obtain a better definition of the lower cluster main sequence. Using the fitting method we situate the cluster at a distance of d = 3600 pc (Vo-Mv = 12.80). The main color excess value is = 1.24 mag. In analyzing observed characteristics and spatial positions of the bluest cluster stars we conclude that the star WR 67 has a good chance to be a cluster member. In that case the mass of its progenitor should be greater than 50 M⊙ according to evolutionary models. From isochrone fitting the age of Pis 20 is 5.1 x 10⁶ y. We discuss the cluster mass spectrum whose slope, within the observational uncertainties, appears to be similar to a Salpeter law. We notice that high WR/OB and WC/WN number ratios are present not only within the cluster itself but also in the association where Pis 20 is situated. The cluster distance derived here prevents to assume any spatial connection between Pis 20 and the supernova remnant MSH 15-52.     An adaptation of meaning-centered psychotherapy integrating "essential care": A pilot study

    Introduction There is a growing interest in the emotional state of cancer patients. The main objective of this pilot study is to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy and Essential Care (MCP-EC) in patients with advanced cancer compared with usual psychological support. We define "Essential Care"as the promotion of patient care and self-care through the recall of good care experiences and discussion of the concepts: responsibility, self-compassion, kindness, and attitude. Method Pilot, single-center, and prospective study of 30 patients with advanced cancer and emotional distress. Our adaptation consisted in three session Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy-Palliative Care, plus a fourth session named "Essential Care". The study was carried out in two phases. First, 20 patients were randomized to one of the two arms: individual MCP-EC (experimental, n = 10) or usual psychological supportive (control, n = 10). In a second phase, 10 patients were assigned consecutively to Group MCP-EC (n = 10). All patients were evaluated at baseline (pre-) and post-intervention with questionnaires for sociodemographic data and clinical scales. Results Nineteen patients completed the 4 sessions of MCP-EC, 9 individual format and 10 group format. Usual supportive intervention was delivered to 10 control patients. Total 28 patients completed pre- and post-treatment evaluations. There were no pre- vs. post-differences in the evaluations of the control group. In the experimental group, significant pre- vs. post-differences were found in EQ-5D-3L, HADS, FACIT, DM, HAI, SCS-SF, and TD questionnaires. These results indicated that MCP-EC reduced anxiety and depression symptoms, hopelessness, demoralization, as well as increased spiritual well-being and sense of meaning. Participants were satisfied and found the MCP-EC intervention positively. Conclusions This pilot study suggests that the MCP-EC has feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy reducing the emotional distress in advanced cancer patients. Larger studies are warranted to clarify the strengths and limitations of this psychotherapy. © The Author(s), 2021. Published by Cambridge University Press

    Population structure of Asconema setubalense Kent, 1870 at Concepción Seamount, Canary Islands (Spain). Methodological approach using non-invasive techniques

    The hexactinellid sponge Asconema setubalense Kent, 1870is a large bathyal species of the North Atlantic Ocean with a funnel-like body and very large osculum. Populations of A. setubalense have a three-dimensional structure and increase the complexity and biodiversity in their habitat, and are therefore considered to be a habitat-forming species. Nevertheless, at present the information on the extension, biomass, density, population structure, and ecology of this species is scarce, and it could be susceptible to the longline fishing practices that take place in the Canary Islands. The main objectives of this study are to define a functional and accurate methodology to measure specimens of A. setubalense by comparing differences in users, techniques, and morphometric measurements; to describe the height-size relationship; to present the population size structure of the species, and to establish a relationship between the size of A. setubalense and the environmental variables that can be found at the “Banco de La Concepción” seamount (BC). The obtained results suggest that surface area is the most reliable measurement to define the size of this species, whilst also showing a clear correlation with the height of the species. The selected methodology has made it possible to measure the surface area of 1035 specimens and thus obtain the size structure of the population of A. setubalense in BC. The GAM model that was used to analyse the relationship between the size of A. setubalense and the geomorphologic variables of BC, shows areas where there is a high probability of finding large specimens of the species. The results of this study greatly enhance the knowledge of this species and its habitat, and should be considered in future conservation directives, or in the development of indicators to show the good environmental state of habitats. Additionally, the study improves analysis methodology that, with the appropriate morphometric measurements, can favour the development of future studies of this species, and indeed others with a similar morphology or growth pattern.En prensa2,42

    Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy ferromagnetic/superconducting (FM/SC) bilayers with a labyrinth domain structure are used to study nucleation of superconductivity on a fractal network, tunable through magnetic history. As clusters of reversed domains appear in the FM layer, the SC film shows a percolative behavior that depends on two independent processes: the arrangement of initial reversed domains and the fractal geometry of expanding clusters.     CTCF orchestrates the germinal centre transcriptional program and prevents premature plasma cell differentiation

    In germinal centres (GC) mature B cells undergo intense proliferation and immunoglobulin gene modification before they differentiate into memory B cells or long-lived plasma cells (PC). GC B-cell-to-PC transition involves a major transcriptional switch that promotes a halt in cell proliferation and the production of secreted immunoglobulins. Here we show that the CCCTC-binding factor (CTCF) is required for the GC reaction in vivo, whereas in vitro the requirement for CTCF is not universal and instead depends on the pathways used for B-cell activation. CTCF maintains the GC transcriptional programme, allows a high proliferation rate, and represses the expression of Blimp-1, the master regulator of PC differentiation. Restoration of Blimp-1 levels partially rescues the proliferation defect of CTCF-deficient B cells. Thus, our data reveal an essential function of CTCF in maintaining the GC transcriptional programme and preventing premature PC differentiation

    Faunal behavior in response to near bottom water dynamics in a marine protected area (Cantabrian Sea, southern Bay of Biscay)

    A set of lander deployments in a deep marine protected area (MPA; El Cachucho) combining environmental sensors and a baited camera provided insight on the relationship between faunal behavior and oceanographic dynamics. Landers were deployed at different depths, ranging from 500 to 960 m for a period of 24–26 h. A total of 10,989 photographs were downloaded and synchronized using a time code with all the environmental variables recorded (pressure, temperature, salinity, water current, and direction). Total richness accounted for 41 species of different taxonomic groups (21 fishes, 11 crustaceans, 6 echinoderms, and 3 molluscs). The most abundant species were Synaphobranchus kaupii, Mora moro, Phycis blennoides, Helicolenus dactylopterus, and Etmopterus spinax. Arrival times (Tarr) and maximum number of individuals (Nmax) greatly differed among stations. Cluster analysis showed two main faunal groups in relation to depth: those close to the top of the bank and those in the flanks. Species densities were estimated using Priede's equations and compared with those obtained in previous studies using trawl samplers. The relation of species with environmental variables showed high variability depending on the location of the station and the associated variables (depth, current, and water masses). Near-bottom dynamics were consistent with previously known oceanographic patterns at the bank, dominated by background anticyclonic recirculation along the flanks overlaid by strong tidal cycles. Current and hydrography tidally driven phases showed an evident effect in the arrival of species at some locations. Species appeared during specific periods matching the beginning of the flooding phase or end of the ebb phase. Movement rates (cm s−1) were estimated for some invertebrate species, such as crabs (Bathynectes maravigna, 0.66; Pagurus sp., 0.09), the gasteropod Colus gracilis (0.15), and echinoderms (Cidaris cidaris, 0.04; Araeosoma fenestratum, 0.23)
